• Classroom Management

Enhance your classroom management skills. You will identify and develop procedures and routines that are perfect for YOUR situation. We will take a deep look at the philosophy of “Discipline with Dignity” to ensure that you possess discipline strategies that are highly effective without escalating disruptive student behavior. You will leave this course having developed your procedures, routines, classroom rules and consequences.

• Effective Demonstrations

Whether in a welding lab or a bioscience lab,effective demonstrations are crucial. If done correctly, every student can successfully perform the task with little or no frustration, without wasted materials, and attain proficiency in a way that will ensure the whole class progresses at an appropriate pace. This is a real career extender! When you are successful in the lab, and the students are successful in the lab, teaching can be very rewarding. An added bonus is that students complete the new task in a safe environment. Come and learn this four-part demonstration method.

• Technical Reading

Your CTE classroom truly is the key to meaningful application of the current career and college readiness standards. This workshop will give you specific examples where Arizona’s College and Career Readiness standards for Technical Reading already exist in your CTE program, it will provide opportunities for you to incorporate additional standards into your lessons, AND will give you strategies to take back to your classroom to increase your students’ ability to read difficult technical information more effectively. Come find out why CTE really is a powerful driver for creating literate employees for our 21 st century workforce.

• Think Tank

Think Tank is designed to provide CTE professional with an opportunity to hear a presentation on a particular topic and to discuss that topic in depth. The topics for the spring are yet to be decided. The short list includes College & Career Readiness Standards, Leadership Development and Curriculum Integration. Whatever the topic, you won’t be disappointed. Consider this your opportunity to “feed your brain.”

• CTSO Adviser’s Toolkit

Managing a CTE student organization (CTSO) can be overwhelming. The purpose of this workshop is to provide you with the skills you need to do the job effectively and without pulling your hair out! During this workshop, participants will cover event organization and management, legal and ethical issues, ADE requirements, integrating CTSOs into the curriculum, fundraising, recognition events and more. You will have an opportunity to gain insights and share resources with fellow CTE teachers.

• Using Advisory Councils Effectively

This interactive workshop is designed to ensure success in the formation and use of industry advisory councils. During this workshop, you will learn how to form a committee, how to conduct useful advisory council meetings and how to use advisory council members for continuous program improvement.

• Work-based Learning

Create meaningful work-based learning experiences for your students. This course will provide teachers with a variety of models of work-based learning along with the associated forms, agreements, and guidelines. You will select the model that is most appropriate for your situation and create a plan to implement work-based learning as a part of your premier program!

Industry Update

The 2014 CTE Industry Update Program provides educators the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills and receive on-the-job training in CTE program-related industries. The program also enables educators to experience work-based learning in much the same way as their students. Applicants are especially encouraged to pursue experiences in new technology and innovations consistent with their CTE programs.

West-MEC offers a series of courses and workshops. Educators from throughout Arizona are welcome to participate. Priority is given to employees from West-MEC member districts. The prices listed are for employees in member districts. Individuals from districts outside of West-MEC who wish to participate in these workshops should contact the West-MEC Professional Development office at 623.738.0024 for pricing.

All workshop/course participants will receive certificates documenting their hours for purposes of recertification.

Cancellations must be in writing and postmarked or e-mailed to mike.bush@west-mec.org no later than seven (7) days prior to the date of the workshop.

Substitutions will not be accepted unless received in writing from the original registrant or CTE Director’s office. Registrants unable to attend may send a substitute. A letter from the original registrant authorizing the substitution must be e-mailed to mike.bush@west-mec.org along with the substitute’s completed registration form no later than seven (7) days prior to the date on which the workshop will be held.

Refunds are not available. Registrants who fail to cancel participation within seven (7) days prior to a workshop or who fail to make a substitution within seven (7) days will be charged for the workshop.
