• Classroom Management

Think Tank is designed to provide CTE professional with an opportunity to hear a presentation on a particular topic and to discuss that topic in depth. The topics for the spring are yet to be decided. The short list includes College & Career Readiness Standards, Leadership Development and Curriculum Integration. Whatever the topic, you won’t be disappointed. Consider this your opportunity to “feed your brain.”

• Effective Demonstrations

Whether in a welding lab or a bioscience lab,effective demonstrations are crucial. If done correctly, every student can successfully perform the task with little or no frustration, without wasted materials, and attain proficiency in a way that will ensure the whole class progresses at an appropriate pace. This is a real career extender! When you are successful in the lab, and the students are successful in the lab, teaching can be very rewarding. An added bonus is that students complete the new task in a safe environment. Come and learn this four-part demonstration method.

• Technical Reading

Your CTE classroom truly is the key to meaningful application of the current career and college readiness standards. This workshop will give you specific examples where Arizona’s College and Career Readiness standards for Technical Reading already exist in your CTE program, it will provide opportunities for you to incorporate additional standards into your lessons, AND will give you strategies to take back to your classroom to increase your students’ ability to read difficult technical information more effectively. • Instructional Best Practices (AZ CTE Curriculum Consortium – Day 3)

Day 3 of the Curriculum Consortium Training follows the training begun in Day 1 with a small group of teachers preparing and delivering lessons and receiving some coaching and
feedback on their teaching after the lesson is complete. Participants will have multiple opportunities to observe lessons taught and teachers working with a coach to gain feedback
on those lessons, as well as teaching and being coached themselves.

• Laboratory Safety and Management

This workshop is designed to help participants develop a laboratory improvement plan including management, clean-up procedures, safety procedures, and meeting monitoring agency mandates.
Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate their CTE labs and develop a management system for their CTE labs. Participants, who complete the lab safety course,
have the opportunity to earn 15 CEU hours approved by ADE to be used for moving from provisional to standard CTE certificate or for recertification hours.
NOTE: To meet the 15-hour requirement, participants will also complete two related assignments and submit them via email. In addition, participants
will meet one additional time to tour a high school industrial technology program.

• Work-based Learning

Create meaningful work-based learning experiences for your students. This course will provide teachers with a variety of models of work-based learning along with the associated forms, agreements, and guidelines. You will select the model that is most appropriate for your situation and create a plan to implement work-based learning as a part of your premier program!

• Snap-On Scan Tool Training

This training is designed to provide you with the skills needed to use scanners to diagnose problems. During the workshop you will receive training on scan controls
and navigation, vehicle communication software, component testing and more. The workshop is hands-on. At the end of the training you will have an opportunity to test for an
industry recognized credential.
Maximum participants: 10
NOTE: Separate certification can be obtained through Snap-On at the cost of $1.00 to the instructor.

• Rubrics

CTE courses are performance-based. When teachers let students know exactly how their work will be evaluated, the students’ level of performance always improves.
Come and participate in a hands-on activity that uses a rubric, determine where the rubric made a positive difference in your performance, and then design a rubric for one
of your own student projects with the help of West-MEC specialists. Bring the assignment for one of your student projects and your current grading criteria for that project with
you to help get this practical day started.

Industry Update

The 2014 CTE Industry Update Program provides educators the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills and receive on-the-job training in CTE program-related industries. The program also enables educators to experience work-based learning in much the same way as their students. Applicants are especially encouraged to pursue experiences in new technology and innovations consistent with their CTE programs.

West-MEC offers a series of courses and workshops. Educators from throughout Arizona are welcome to participate. Priority is given to employees from West-MEC member districts. The prices listed are for employees in member districts. Individuals from districts outside of West-MEC who wish to participate in these workshops should contact the West-MEC Professional Development office at 623.738.0024 for pricing.

All workshop/course participants will receive certificates documenting their hours for purposes of recertification.

Cancellations must be in writing and postmarked or e-mailed to mike.bush@west-mec.org no later than seven (7) days prior to the date of the workshop.

Substitutions will not be accepted unless received in writing from the original registrant or CTE Director’s office. Registrants unable to attend may send a substitute. A letter from the original registrant authorizing the substitution must be e-mailed to mike.bush@west-mec.org along with the substitute’s completed registration form no later than seven (7) days prior to the date on which the workshop will be held.

Refunds are not available. Registrants who fail to cancel participation within seven (7) days prior to a workshop or who fail to make a substitution within seven (7) days will be charged for the workshop.
