During this hands-on computer training, participants will learn how to effectively use Microsoft Word 2010; create, edit, and format documents, utilize tables and lists, add design elements and layout options. • Using Advisory Councils Effectively

This interactive workshop is designed to ensure success in the formation and use of industry advisory councils. During this workshop you will learn how to form a committee, how to conduct useful advisory council meetings and how to use advisory council members for continuous program improvement.

• Technical Reading

Your CTE classroom truly is the key to meaningful application of the current career and college readiness standards. This workshop will give you specific examples where Arizona’s College and Career Readiness standards for technical reading already exist in your CTE program, it will provide opportunities for you to incorporate additional standards into your lessons, AND will give you strategies to use to increase your students’ ability to read difficult technical information more effectively. Bring your textbook or a couple of industry journal articles to use for building close reading lessons to take back to your classroom the very next day. Come find out why CTE really is a powerful driver for creating literate employees for our 21st century workforce.

What constitutes an “approved program?” Come and learn in depth what is required to ensure that your program is in compliance and eligible to receive Federal, State and JTED funding. • Snap-On Scan Tool Training

This training is designed to provide you with the skills needed to use scanners to diagnose problems. During the workshop you will receive training on scan controls and navigation, vehicle communication software, component testing and more. The workshop is hands-on. At the end of the training you will have an opportunity to test for an industry recognized credential.

NOTE: Separate certification can be obtained through Snap-On at the cost of $1.00 to the instructor.

• Instructional Best Practices (AZ CTE Curriculum Consortium – Day 1)

This course is an introduction to the design and use of CTE curriculum. It includes an in depth look at writing objectives and incorporating active participation strategies throughout instruction, weaving these strategies across the entire workshop. Participants in this workshop will receive password-protected access to the AZ CTE Curriculum Consortium with its 2800+ (and growing) bank of outstanding lesson plans for more than 20 CTE programs written by Arizona CTE teachers.

• Laboratory Safety and Management

This workshop is designed to help participants develop a laboratory improvement plan including management, clean-up procedures, safety procedures, and meeting monitoring agency mandates. Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate their CTE labs and develop a management system for their CTE labs. Participants, who complete the lab safety course, have the opportunity to earn 15 CEU hours approved by ADE to be used for moving from provisional to standard CTE certificate or for recertification hours.

• Introduction to Microsoft Excel

This course is recommended for individuals who are new to Excel or have limited spreadsheet experience. Participants will create and edit basic worksheets and workbooks, edit text, values, formulas, and pictures. Move and copy data, and work with ranges, rows, and columns.

• Instructional Best Practices(AZ CTE Curriculum Consortium – Day 2)

Day 2 of the Curriculum Consortium Training follows the training begun in Day 1 and will add expertise in using introductions and closure to any teacher’s toolbox, whether a new teacher or one with many years of experience, as well as hands-on experience with several additional vocabulary and active participation strategies.

• Instructional Best Practices (AZ CTE Curriculum Consortium – Day 3)

Day 3 of the Curriculum Consortium Training follows the training begun in Day 1 with a small group of teachers preparing and delivering lessons and receiving some coaching and feedback on their teaching after the lesson is complete. Participants will have multiple opportunities to observe lessons taught and teachers working with a coach to gain feedback on those lessons, as well as teaching and being coached themselves.

Prerequisite:Day 1 and Day 2 of the Curriculum Consortium Training are required.

• Safety Toolbox

Safety Toolbox is designed to give you specific subject information for your classroom and laboratory settings with regards to safety. It can take a lot of work to develop safety topics and gather information and the resources provided should be informative and useful in your planning of your lessons. Toolbox topics will cover a variety of informational safety subjects to remind instructors and students the importance of being safe and emphasize safety in the classroom. Some topics include but not limited to, Back Safety, Construction Safety, Emergency Response, Fire Safety, Hand/Power Tool Safety, Protective Clothing, Ergonomics, and the Role of the Safety Professional. So, come learn and add to your Safety Toolbox.

• Increasing Productivity and Collaboration from any device

Google Docs, Forms, Sheets, and Slides are productivity apps that let you create different kinds of online documents, work on them in real time with other people, and store them in your Google Drive online — all for free. You can access the documents, spreadsheets, and presentations you create from any computer, anywhere in the world. (There’s even some work you can do without an Internet connection!) This class will give you a quick overview of the many things that you can do with Google Docs, Forms, Sheets, and Slides.

• Surveys Your Way – navigating Google Forms

You can use Google Forms to create surveys and quizzes, collect research data, build a database of contacts, accept event registration and more! Unlike other “free” online survey platforms, with a Google Form you can have unlimited questions and responses, as well as logic branching, at no charge.

Representatives from the Arizona Department of Education will be on hand to assist you with certification questions and to process renewal applications or move from provisional to standard certificate. This is a one-day, stand-alone training designed for CTSO officer teams and advisers. Managing a CTE student organization (CTSO) can be overwhelming. The purpose of this workshop is to provide you with the skills you need to do the job effectively and without pulling your hair out! During this workshop, participants will cover event organization and management, legal and ethical issues, ADE requirements, integrating CTSOs into the curriculum, fundraising, recognition events and more. You will have an opportunity to gain insights and share resources with fellow CTE teachers.

Industry Update

The 2014 CTE Industry Update Program provides educators the opportunity to update their knowledge and skills and receive on-the-job training in CTE program-related industries. The program also enables educators to experience work-based learning in much the same way as their students. Applicants are especially encouraged to pursue experiences in new technology and innovations consistent with their CTE programs.

West-MEC offers a series of courses and workshops. Educators from throughout Arizona are welcome to participate. Priority is given to employees from West-MEC member districts. The prices listed are for employees in member districts. Individuals from districts outside of West-MEC who wish to participate in these workshops should contact the West-MEC Professional Development office at 623.738.0024 for pricing.

All workshop/course participants will receive certificates documenting their hours for purposes of recertification.
